For Safety's Sake, Focus on Smoke Detectors

Tragically, recent history has shown that every home and business should have – and take care of -- smoke detectors.

Studies have shown that 25% of American families have not replaced the batteries in their smoke detectors, or don't remember when the batteries were last changed.

Folks, it's crucial, for your safety and the safety of your loved ones (including your pets), to be sure that your smoke detectors will be working when, and where, they're needed. Many lives are lost every year because of a simple thing like dead smoke detector batteries.

Let's point out a few simple tips that electricians such as RMS Electrical Contractors recommend:

Avoid the “out of sight, out of mind” trap.

You've just put up a new calendar for 2008. Right now, go to your calendar and mark a date for changing your batteries.

Do this every year, on roughly the same date, and you'll have taken a major step in improving your home's safety.

By the way, if you need a calendar, or electrical work done, give RMS Electrical Contractors a call.

Be sure that you have enough smoke detectors.

Current electrical code requires the following:

  • There should be at least one smoke detector on every floor.
  • There should be one smoke detector in every bedroom.
  • One smoke detector should be a combination smoke and carbon monoxide detector
  • Don't forget to put one in your basement, too.

RMS Electrical Contractors also recommend these steps.

Be aware of seasonal hazards.

Winter is prime time for fire or CO hazards. Furnaces can emit carbon monoxide. It's odorless, colorless, and can overcome people before they realize anything is wrong.

People use wood stoves, ovens, space heaters and other electrical devices for heat. Each has merits, and each presents a potential fire or CO danger.

Holiday candles can be forgotten, and may ignite nearby flammables.

A few very inexpensive little gadgets, properly placed and maintained, can save you, your family, and your pets from injury or death.

If you need help, please ask for it.

RMS Electrical Contractors can install appropriate smoke detectors for you, and replace your batteries as needed.

Please call us for these and all electrical needs. Our highly qualified electricians are waiting to assist you.
